Limoges et le Limousin “sur le vif”

“Sur les Traces de DUMONTEL” : Improve your AS/A2 level students’ chances of exam success!! Introduce them to LIMOGES, a French regional capital rich in cultural heritage and its renowned “Limougeaud” author Franck Linol ( writer of the series “Meurtres en Limousin” and creator of the detective “Inspecteur Dumontel”.


Based on Franck Linol’s latest POLAR (crime novel) – Matin de Cendre (published in March 2014) – the principal but NOT exclusive theme for the course is “Limoges et Le Limousin sous l’occupation”. Students explore this and a variety of other AS/A2 related themes by “following in Dumontel’s footsteps” as he carries out his investigation into the Oradour sur Glane  massacre of June 10th 1944 (
N.B. students do not have to have to read the book to engage with the programme.

Visites et rencontres proposées au cours du stage/Visits and meeting opportunities provided during the course:
• Meet the author himself – and his “alter ego”

• Discover Oradour sur Glane – “le village martyr” and meet “Clémence” witness to the massacre and key character in “Matin de cendre”

• Visit le “Musée de la Résistance” to learn about life in occupied France.

• See Limoges through the eyes of DUMONTEL and explore his favourite haunts including the “Commissariat de Police”
• Visit one of Limoges’ renowned porcelain factories
• Visit a regional newspaper or a radio station, meet reporters and editors.

Activités langagières et ateliers/language activities and workshops:
• Workshops led by the author - A day in the life of a crime writer/writing a crime novel /contemporary issues
• AS/A2 “masterclass” surgery sessions focussing on exam task and test types led by a native French speaker – herself a local limougeaud!
• Guided discussions/debates with young people from Limoges/Limousin Lycées
• “Sondages” with local people linked to key AS/A2 themes
• Simulations and role plays – be a cop, a suspect, a victim, a villain, a reporter

• Interviews with British ex pats living (the dream?) in the Limousin.


They are given opportunities to improve their French by:
• Meeting the author, Franck Linol
• Interviewing local inhabitants on a range of AS/A2 related themes (viz: study of a region/author)
• Exploring some of Inspecteur Dumontel’s favourite haunts in and around Limoges
• Engaging in a selection of “detective routine” simulations
• Paying their respects to the massacred victims of Oradour sur Glane
• Participating in a series of mini debates with French youngsters
• Working with authentic texts and artefacts.
• Visiting places of cultural, geographical and historical interest


Sample programme :

Day 1

Arrival at Limoges airport (from 1500hrs to 20hrs) Meet & greet by our representative.
Mini-bus or taxi transfers to the accommodation centre (CHEOPS : Introducting session getting acquainted with Dumontel.

Day 2

08.00hrs Breakfast 09h00/12h00 : French language activities
Transfer by public transport to the town centre. Free time for lunch.
 Initial town visit: sightseing tour with the tourist train. Bernardaud porcelain factory visit. Evening (before or after dinner) : meeting with representative(s) of the british community living in the Limousin


Day 3

08.00hrs Breakfast

09h00/12h00 : French language activities
Transfer by public transport to the town centre. Free time for lunch.
Walking tour with the author, Frank Linol, exploring Inspecteur Dumontel’s favoutite places in Limoges ending with a visit to the Police headquarters. Meeting with a police representative.


Day 4

08.00hrs Breakfast 09h00/12h00 : French language activities.
Transfer by public transport to the town centre. Free time for lunch.
Transport by public transport to Oradour sur Glane, with F. Linol. Visit of the remembrance centre and the martyr village. Meeting with a relative of victims of the massacre (Camille's character  in the book).
Return to Limoges . Meeting with a journalist from a local newspaper or radio statio

Day 5

08.00hrs Breakfast
09h00/12h00 : French courses/language activities.
Transfer with public transport to the town centre Free time for lunch. Meeting with F. Linol and French students (in their school or in the residential centre depending on the availability of the French class/teacher)
Evening : dinner in local restaurant (“crèperie” or pizzeria)


Day 6

08.00hrs Breakfast
Transfer to the airport.

Depending on the flight departure time we can arrange extra language activities, another visit in/around Limoges or plan free time for shopping.


Duration, Groupe size, dates :

The standard programme is 5 nights : Sunday to Thursday with departure on the Friday, and 4 full intensive days : monday to thursday.

Minimum group size is 10 +  accompanying staff, and the maximum is 18.


Travel & transport :

Limoges has an international airport with routes to and from East Midlands, Leeds, Liverpool, London Stansted, Southampton, Bristol.
The cost of transport from the UK and back is not included in the cost given below.
